Best E-Bike Trails in Miami & Fort Lauderdale

Miami-Dade and Broward will sell you an ocean and then ticket you on the sand. The rides that work: Oleta River State Park in North Miami Beach, the Rickenbacker Causeway bike lane to Key Biscayne, the FPL / Atlantic Greenway, and Everglades Shark Valley if you want a 15-mile tram road at park speed. Statewide law and beach bans: e-biking in Florida.

Why Ride Here?

Oleta is 30 minutes from downtown and does not feel like it — mangroves, 10+ miles of intermediate/advanced MTB, 4 novice, 3 paved, cabins, a concession that rents bikes. Rickenbacker is the postcard water crossing. Shark Valley is the Everglades on a bicycle if you obey 10 mph on trails and 15 on the tram road.

Oleta: 3400 NE 163rd St, North Miami Beach; park map at the ranger station. Rickenbacker: Virginia Key / Key Biscayne green lane and shared path, William Powell Bridge. Shark Valley: Tamiami Trail (US 41) west of Miami; 15-mile loop, five NPS e-bike-legal trails in Everglades NP (Shark Valley Tram, Snake Bight, Rowdy Bend, Long Pine Key, L-67). Fort Lauderdale: A1A / beach path where posted — not every municipality agrees.

Distance

Oleta off-road ~14–15 miles of trail, paved 3. Rickenbacker / Key Biscayne out-and-back is a morning (bridge plus island loop). Shark Valley tram road 15 miles round trip. FPL Greenway segments vary; ride the signed sections.

Surface

Oleta: sand, roots, boardwalk, Australian pine duff, plus paved loop. Rickenbacker: painted green lane and asphalt path next to 45 mph traffic — not a rail-trail. Shark Valley: crushed / paved tram road. Beach sand is not legal in most of this metro.

E-Bike Classes Allowed

Oleta: e-bikes as bicycles on designated bike trails; helmet under 16; park hours 8 a.m.–sunset; $6/vehicle. Everglades NP Compendium: Class 1/2 on five named trails; 10 mph on park trails, 15 on Shark Valley Tram; throttle-only restricted to public roadways — pedal-assist on trails. Miami Beach and many Broadwalks restrict or ban micromobility. Class 3 is the wrong tool here.

Difficulty

Rickenbacker is easy except wind and the bridge. Oleta intermediate/advanced singletrack is real MTB. Shark Valley is flat and exposed — difficulty is heat and the 10–15 mph cap, not grade.

Elevation

Bridge pitch on Rickenbacker / Powell. Oleta is coastal scrub, not a mountain. Shark Valley is a parking-lot grade for 15 miles.

Parking

Oleta fills — ranger asks you to call for capacity; $6. Shark Valley NPS lot, fee area, bike-or-tram. Rickenbacker: limited lots on Virginia Key / Crandon. Do not park in a turning lane to “just climb the bridge.”

Charging

Concession and picnic at Oleta. Nothing on Shark Valley except what you carried. Hotel brick in Miami Beach or Coconut Grove. Matched charger. Heat-soaked packs in a closed rental car are how you skip tomorrow.

Food & Water

Oleta concession snacks. Key Biscayne has actual food. Shark Valley: vending / visitor center, then 15 exposed miles — two bottles minimum.

Bike Shops

Miami-Dade Specialized / Trek, e-bike boutiques in Wynwood and South Miami. Oleta River Outdoor Center inside the park for trail-side issues. Pads and chain after Oleta sand.

Rentals

Oleta River Outdoor Center: mountain bikes, plus paddle gear. Miami Beach hotel fleets — confirm they are allowed on the path you intend. Do not rent a Class 3 for Shark Valley.

Best Time to Ride

November–April. Summer is lightning, heat index, and mosquito. Shark Valley at opening. Oleta weekdays. Hurricane: the park is closed and the pack does not get charged in floodwater.

What We Learned Riding It

The ocean view is the causeway, not the sand. NPS 10–15 mph is a ranger conversation, not a suggestion. Oleta’s concession line on Saturday is the wait; the singletrack is the ride. Throttle-only on Shark Valley trails is the Compendium’s no. Bring more water than Orlando — there is no Winter Garden taco stand at mile 7 of the tram road.
