Fall Ebike Kit: Lights, Layers, and a Battery That Hates Cold
Lithium sags in the cold. Drivers still need to see you at 5:40 p.m.

The short answer
Cold cuts lithium range. Darkness cuts whether drivers see you. The 2026 fall kit is a CPSC helmet, a bar light you can aim, a rear flasher that runs all day, and a battery brought inside overnight. Accessories that do not get used are catalog weight.
Fall is when commuters become year-round riders or they do not. The difference is rarely the motor. It is a helmet you will wear in wind, a front light a driver can see at dusk, and gloves that still work with a display.
Lights: U.S. road bikes legally need a white front and red rear after dark in every state; output is set locally. A bar-mounted light in the 600–1,000 lumen class plus a seatpost flasher is the usual commuter stack. Helmet: look for a CPSC 16 CFR 1203 bicycle helmet. MIPS-style slip-liner helmets are widely sold; they are a rotational-impact design, not a legal requirement. Class 3 helmet laws are stricter in many states (California requires a helmet for every Class 3 rider, any age).
Battery chemistry: lithium-ion voltage sag in the cold is real. Range drops as cell temperature falls; storing a pack in a 40°F garage overnight and then asking it for a 20-mile commute is how Eco mode lies. Bring the battery indoors. Do not leave it on the charger as a lifestyle. Full-length fenders if the bike did not ship with them. A cover if you park outside. None of this is exotic. It is why you still leave the car keys in the bowl in November.
Buy the light before the carbon bottle cage. Nobody DNF’d a commute because the bottle was three grams heavy.
Questions people ask
How much range do you lose in the cold?+
Enough to plan a shorter loop or a lower assist. Lithium sag is chemistry, not a defective pack. Store the battery indoors.
Are flashing lights legal?+
A white front and red rear after dark are standard nationwide. Flash versus steady is a local rule — check the city you actually ride.
Should I do these mods or repairs myself?+
Do this at your own risk. Work with a qualified ebike or e-moto technician for wiring, batteries, brakes, and controller maps. SickEBike is an informational desk, not a shop. A wrong amp limit, a mismatched charger, or a bad bleed can start a fire or a crash.

Pre-ride to annual: chain, belt, brakes, tires, battery, torque, firmware. Mid-drives eat chains. Never pressure-wash the motor. At your own risk — a shop does bleeds and Bosch crates.
