Ebike Motors in 2026: Bosch, Shimano, Specialized, Hubs
The 3.1, the CX, EP8, and the 750W hub that still fills the aisle.
By Maya Chen
The short answer
The 2026 motor map is still three stories: Bosch and Shimano mid-drives at dealer brands (Trek, Gazelle, Canyon), Specialized’s 3.1 on Turbo trail bikes, and the 750W Class 2 hub that Lectric, Rad, and Aventon sell by the tens of thousands. Peak-watt Amazon titles are not the statutory 750W.
Mid-drive headlines in 2026 cluster around three families. Bosch Performance Line CX (Smart System / Gen 5, BDU384Y): 85 Nm stock, 250 W continuous, about 600 W peak, ~2.8–2.9 kg. On 4 May 2026 Bosch began rolling Performance Upgrade 2.0, a free software update that can raise situational torque to 120 Nm and assistance to 600% in named modes (Race, Turbo, eMTB+, Cargo, Auto), with the extra support limited at low speed. Peak power of the CX stays 750 W in Bosch’s notes.
Shimano EP801 (DU-EP801): 85 Nm, 250 W continuous, ~600 W peak in published measurements, ~2.6–2.8 kg, up to 400% assist. E-TUBE PROJECT is the tuner. Shimano still sells the EP801 in 2026 with no announced successor as of early September. Out-of-warranty repairs are typically whole-motor replacement, not a shop stator job — a real ownership cost.
Hub motors are not dead
Specialized’s 3.1 (Brose-based) is the Levo 4 motor: 101 Nm / 666 W on standard bikes, 111 Nm / 720 W (850 W peak after the February 2026 S-Works update). Hub motors still own the sub-$2,000 commuter: RadRover, Aventon Aventure 3, Lectric XP4. U.S. federal ‘low-speed electric bicycle’ language at the CPSC still keys off operable pedals, ≤750 W, and motor-only speed ≤20 mph. That is why so many direct-to-consumer hubs are sold as 750W Class 2.
Choose Bosch or Shimano if you want a dealer who stocks motors. Choose a hub if you want price and a simple wheel swap. There is no moral high ground in either direction — only heat, noise, and who will still have parts in five years.
Questions people ask
Is a 750W hub worse than a Bosch mid-drive?+
Worse at climbing in the right gear and at feeling like a bicycle. Better at price and at throttle Class 2 commuting. Different jobs.
What motor is in the Levo 4?+
Specialized 3.1, developed with Brose. Standard 101 Nm / 666 W peak; S-Works higher, with a February 2026 firmware bump on S-Works peak power.
Should I do these mods or repairs myself?+
Do this at your own risk. Work with a qualified ebike or e-moto technician for wiring, batteries, brakes, and controller maps. SickEBike is an informational desk, not a shop. A wrong amp limit, a mismatched charger, or a bad bleed can start a fire or a crash.

Hub ignores the gears. Mid-drive uses them. Hills, cargo, range-per-Wh, chain bills, and the $1,500 line where the answer actually changes.
