Best E-Bike Trails in Central Florida

Central Florida is where the pavement goes quiet: Withlacoochee State Trail 46 miles from Dade City to Citrus Springs, Van Fleet State Trail ~29 miles Polk City to Mabel through the Green Swamp, South Lake / Clermont rollers, and Santos / Cross Florida Greenway if you want dirt. Why Ride Here?

It is the anti-Orlando. Floral City, Inverness, Brooksville, cattle, cypress, and a trail long enough that a 500 Wh pack and Turbo is a planning problem. Van Fleet is one of the most rural paved rail-trails in the state — no fee, 8 a.m.–sunset. Santos is the Ocala IMBA name.

Distance

Withlacoochee 46 miles one way (~92 out-and-back; Explorcation’s 2026 camera day added town spurs to clear 100). Van Fleet ~29 miles. South Lake ~13. Santos: dozens of miles of singletrack, day-use free. SR 50 connector toward the C2C: Withlacoochee to Sumter line complete as of January 2026; remaining gap toward South Lake ~16 miles.

Surface

State rail-trails: asphalt, 12 ft class, canopied in spots, exposed swamp in others. Santos: dirt, limestone, roots. After rain, Van Fleet is still paved and the Green Swamp is still wet on the shoulders.

E-Bike Classes Allowed

Florida State Parks FAQ: e-bikes as bicycles on state trails and multi-use/bicycle trails, not on pedestrian/equestrian-only, posted speeds apply. Call the ranger if you are Class 3 — some guideline pages still talk down electric assist on linear state trails. Santos: e-bikes on designated cycling trails (E-Cycle Adventures 2026 roundup). Croom / hunt WMAs: FWC dates, blaze orange in season.

Difficulty

Pavement is beginner-endurance. 46 miles in July is not beginner. Santos and Croom are real MTB. Clermont’s ridge is the only sustained Florida climbing on pavement.

Elevation

Withlacoochee and Van Fleet are rail-grade. Clermont / Lake County is the Central Ridge — you will use a gear. Santos punchy. A mid-drive is luxury; a 750 W hub still finishes Van Fleet.

Parking

Dade City, Floral City, Inverness, Citrus Springs trailheads (Withlacoochee). Van Fleet: Polk City, no fee. Santos: Greenway lots, free day use. Alafia is the Tampa-side dirt extra ($4–5).

Charging

Inverness and Brooksville lunch. Nothing on Van Fleet but what you carried — treat it like a desert even though it is swamp. Matched brick at the motel. Do not leave a pack in a truck cab in August.

Food & Water

Floral City and Inverness are the Withlacoochee towns (Explorcation’s camera stops). Van Fleet: pack it. Clermont has actual restaurants on South Lake. Water at trailheads, not at mile 18 of the swamp.

Bike Shops

Brooksville / Inverness independents, Ocala shops near Santos, E-Cycle Adventures in Brooksville / New Port Richey. Chain after limestone.

Rentals

E-Cycle Adventures is the Nature Coast desk. Clermont / Winter Garden fleets if you start on South Lake. Confirm Class 1/2 for park pavement.

Best Time to Ride

October–April. Van Fleet in summer is heat plus no shade plus no store. Hunting season on Croom and Green Swamp WMA: check FWC. Fog on winter mornings is real. Hurricanes close state trails for trees.

What We Learned Riding It

46 miles of Withlacoochee is a battery plan, not a vibe. Van Fleet is empty enough that a flat without a tube is a walk. The C2C still has a Green Swamp-shaped hole — do not GPS-straight-line it. Call the park about Class 3. Blaze orange is not fashion in November. Two bottles, then two more.
