Florida Coast-to-Coast Trail by E-Bike

The Florida Coast-to-Coast Trail is the state’s attempt at a paved Gulf-to-Atlantic. VISIT FLORIDA (2026): 223 miles in place, 253 when complete, about 88% done, St. Petersburg to Titusville. 100 Florida Trails’ January 2026 update: SR 50 from Withlacoochee to the Sumter line is complete; ~16 miles remain to South Lake; a 4.5-mile Orange County gap (Hiawassee to Seminole-Wekiva) was under construction. Why Ride Here?

It strings the best rail-trails in Florida into one argument: Pinellas, Starkey, Suncoast, Good Neighbor, Withlacoochee, South Lake, West Orange, Seminole Wekiva, Spring-to-Spring, East Central Regional Rail Trail, Space Coast. Trail towns — Dunedin, Brooksville, Clermont, Winter Garden, Sanford, Titusville — actually have lunch. Gaps still require a shuttle or quiet-road connector. Crossroads Bike Tours was selling a 6-day, ~235-mile self-guided with e-bike rentals into 2027, which is the honest length with connectors.

Route Map

West to east (100floridatrails / VISIT FLORIDA): Pinellas Trail → Starkey → Suncoast → Good Neighbor → Withlacoochee (Croom junction) → SR 50 connector → South Lake → West Orange → (Orange County gap) → Seminole Wekiva / Cross Seminole → Spring-to-Spring → East Central Regional Rail Trail → Space Coast / Titusville. Florida Hikes still describes ~191 paved miles plus 30+ missing; VISIT FLORIDA’s 223/253 is the 2026 planning number. Use their map, not a phone that routes you through the Green Swamp on dirt roads at dusk.

Distance

223 miles current / 253 complete (VISIT FLORIDA). Florida Hikes: 199.1 miles in two pieces if you skip the Green Swamp gap. Tour operators quote ~235 with road connectors. Pinellas alone is ~47–50. Withlacoochee 46. West Orange 22. This is 4–7 riding days on an e-bike, not a flex.

Surface

Almost all asphalt rail-trail, 12–15 ft, some boardwalk and underpasses (West Orange over the Turnpike, Seminole Wekiva). Gaps are shoulder, side path, or nothing. Not singletrack.

E-Bike Classes Allowed

Each manager overlays. Pinellas 20 mph. Orange County Class 1/2 only, Class 3 prohibited. Winter Garden 10 mph on some paths. State trails: e-bikes as bicycles per parks FAQ, posted speeds, call if you are Class 3. A single Class 2 750 W, 500–800 Wh bike is the tool that survives every overlay. Speed limits are local.

Difficulty

Beginner pavement, advanced logistics. Clermont hills are the only climbing. Gaps, wind, heat, and a 16-mile missing piece are the difficulty. A loaded cargo bike will finish; a 10 kW e-moto will not be welcome.

Elevation

Rail-grade plus the Lake County ridge around Clermont. Coastal ends are flat and windy. Nobody needs a 120 Nm Bosch CX. A torque-sensor hub or a mid is comfort.

Parking

Stage cars at St. Pete / Tarpon, Brooksville, Clermont / Killarney, Sanford, Titusville. Trailhead lots as named on each segment page. Overnight is hotels in those towns, not camping on the asphalt.

Charging

This is why e-bikes belong here. Town overnight, matched charger, 40–80% if you sit a rest day. Van Fleet / Green Swamp miles have no brick. Two days of Turbo into a headwind will cook a 500 Wh pack — plan 700+ Wh or a conservative PAS. Never charge flood-damaged cells after a storm.

Food & Water

Dunedin, Brooksville, Inverness, Clermont, Winter Garden, Sanford, Titusville. Between them: what you carried. West Orange Plant Street is the best lunch on the route.

Bike Shops

St. Pete, Winter Garden Wheel Works, Clermont, Sanford. Long-distance: a spare tube, chain lube, and the phone number of the next Trek dealer. Maintenance every night: chain, PSI, contacts.

Rentals

Crossroads and similar tours rent e-bikes with a shuttle from Clearwater toward New Smyrna. Point-to-point one-way rentals are rare — most people ride their own XP4 or a dealer mid and sleep in hotels. Confirm Class 1/2 for Orange County.

Best Time to Ride

VISIT FLORIDA: October 1–April 30. Summer is a heat-index problem with afternoon lightning on exposed swamp. Hurricanes erase weeks of this trail. Fog on Van Fleet in January.

What We Learned Riding It

88% complete means you still own a gap plan. The Green Swamp hole is not a Strava segment. Orange County will ticket a Class 3. Pinellas 20 and Winter Garden 10 are both the C2C. Ride PAS, not Turbo, if the pack has to see Titusville. E-bikes make this route a vacation; they do not make the missing 16 miles appear.
