Best E-Bike Trails in Tampa Bay

Pinellas Trail 20 mph, Riverwalk 15, Courtney Campbell wind, Alafia phosphate singletrack. Named pavement and the signs that actually matter.

By Terry Williams

The short answer

The Tampa Bay paved rides are the Pinellas Trail (~47–50 miles, 20 mph), Tampa Riverwalk and Bayshore (15 mph), Courtney Campbell Causeway (~9.5 miles one way, wind, no shade), and Alafia River State Park for dirt. St. Pete Beach and Clearwater ban micromobility on the sand. Florida Class 1–3 are bicycles; the sign still wins.

Tampa Bay is flat, hot, and crossed by water. The rides that work are paved and posted: the Fred Marquis Pinellas Trail, Tampa Riverwalk, Courtney Campbell Causeway Trail, Bayshore, Upper Tampa Bay Trail, and Alafia River State Park if you want dirt. This is the destination page — same structure as Orlando, Miami, Jacksonville, and the Coast-to-Coast. Statewide law sits on the Florida e-biking guide.

Fred Marquis Pinellas Trail paved rail-trail
Pinellas Trail — ~15 ft, ~47–50 miles St. Pete to Tarpon, 20 mph. The regional big one.

Why Ride Here?

It is the densest legal Class 1/2 network on the Gulf: a 50-mile rail-trail, a bayfront causeway, a downtown 15 mph promenade, and an IMBA park 30 minutes east in Lithia. You can ride a Lectric XP4 or Aventure 3 all week without leaving Hillsborough/Pinellas posted pavement.

Route Map

Pinellas: downtown St. Petersburg (1st Ave SE / Bayshore) north to Tarpon Springs and the Pasco line; emergency markers every 200–300 ft; county PDF map. Causeway: Cypress Point Park / Ben T. Davis (Tampa) to Bayport Drive (Clearwater) parallel to SR 60. Riverwalk: downtown Tampa waterfront. Alafia: 14326 S. CR 39, Lithia. Upper Tampa Bay Trail: Montague St off Memorial Hwy toward Lutz. Use Pinellas County and Hillsborough trail maps — this page is the legend, not a GPS file.

Distance

Pinellas Trail ~47 miles (county) to ~50 (Florida Rambler 2025). Courtney Campbell ~9.5 miles one way (AllTrails out-and-back 15–16). Riverwalk ~4.7–5. Bayshore path ~8.4. Upper Tampa Bay ~14–15. Alafia 20+ miles of singletrack; a popular IMBA loop is ~8.5. Pinellas Trail Loop target ~75 miles, still growing (Duke Energy Trail + North Bay Trail).

Surface

Pinellas and causeway: asphalt, typically 12–15 ft. Riverwalk: pavers and concrete, crowded. Alafia: phosphate-mine singletrack, roots, short berms. Fat 4-inch rubber is optional on pavement and useful at Alafia. Sand on St. Pete Beach is not a surface you are allowed to use.

E-Bike Classes Allowed

Florida Class 1–3 are bicycles statewide. Pinellas Trail: e-bikes that combine human and electric power, 20 mph posted. Riverwalk / Bayshore: Class 1 and 2, 15 mph Tampa Parks. Hillsborough Wilderness Park paved loops: Class 1 only — Class 2/3 prohibited. Alafia: e-bikes allowed on designated MTB (Trailforks / park). St. Pete Beach and Clearwater: no micromobility on the beach. Do not unlock Class 3 for the Riverwalk.

Difficulty

Pavement is beginner. Causeway wind is the workout. Alafia is intermediate to double-black in spots with only ~130 ft of elevation — technical, not alpine. Downtown crossings and the SR 60 connections are the crash risk, not the grade.

Elevation

Causeway bridge pitch ~45 ft (Pedal Tampa Bay). Pinellas is rail-grade. Alafia “Best of” loop: ~111 ft high, ~133 ft up on 8.5 miles (MTB Project). Florida hills are short and punchy. A hub motor is enough on pavement; Alafia is why people buy a mid.

Parking

Cypress Point Park and Ben T. Davis for the causeway. Pinellas depots and downtown St. Pete street parking. Alafia main gate $4–5/vehicle; North Trails entrance often free. Riverwalk: city garages. Do not leave a battery on a bakers-rack in July.

Charging

No trail Superchargers. Lunch in Dunedin, Safety Harbor, downtown St. Pete, or a hotel brick. E-Cycle Adventures on the Nature Coast if you are heading north toward Withlacoochee. Matched charger only.

Food & Water

Dunedin and Safety Harbor on Pinellas. Sparkman Wharf / Riverwalk downtown. Nothing on the open causeway — two bottles. Alafia: water at the trailhead, not on the loops.

Bike Shops

Aventon, Trek, and independent shops in Tampa, St. Pete, and Clearwater. Maintenance in this heat is chain and pads, weekly. E-moto counters are a different zip code.

Rentals

Hotel and downtown St. Pete fleets. E-Cycle Adventures (New Port Richey / Brooksville) for Nature Coast days. Confirm 20 mph Class 1/2, not an unlocked 28.

Best Time to Ride

October–April, sunrise in summer. Thunderstorms after 2 p.m. June–September. Causeway is miserable into a summer sea breeze at noon. After a hurricane, wait for debris clearance.

What We Learned Riding It

Ride the posted number: 15 on the Riverwalk, 20 on Pinellas, whatever Alafia’s ranger says that morning. The wind on Courtney Campbell will empty a 500 Wh pack in Turbo. St. Pete Beach is not a fat-tire playground. FDOT’s $15.3M Pinellas-side causeway overpass was targeting late 2026 — until it is open, expect the old at-grade mess. Bring water. The bay does not sell bottles on the bridge.
