How to Clean an E-Bike Without Damaging It

Bosch's maintenance page says remove the battery and the display, then never use a steam jet or a high-pressure cleaner, because water can enter the drive. A garden hose is a different machine. IPX5, the rating on some hubs, is a 6.3 mm test jet at about 30 kPa, which is about 4.4 psi. A washer advertised at 2,000 psi is about 13,800 kPa. That is roughly 460 times the test pressure. Dry the contacts before the pack goes back, and keep chain lube off the rotor. This desk did not wash a bike for this page.

The short answer

Clean an e-bike with the battery off, a sponge, and a low-pressure rinse. Bosch says never use a steam jet or a high-pressure cleaner, because water can enter the drive. A garden hose is not that machine. IPX5 is a 6.3 mm test jet at about 30 kPa, not a driveway pressure washer. Dry the contacts before the pack goes back, and keep chain lube off the rotor.

An e-bike can get wet. Rain is the condition it was built for. A pressure washer is not rain. Bosch's eBike maintenance page says to clean after rides so dirt does not become engrained, to take the battery and the display off first, and under no circumstances to use a steam jet or a high-pressure cleaner, because water can penetrate the drive. A separate Bosch answer about the Purion display says that screen must not be sprayed directly with a high-pressure jet, and that it may stay on the bike for a water jet from a garden hose. Those are two Bosch sentences. They are not permission to buy a driveway washer. Shimano's lifestyle wash says to turn the hose to low pressure, and the same page's shopping list says water, pressurized if possible. Read the procedure, not the shopping line.

What Can Get Wet?

The frame, the tires, the fenders, and the rims can take a sponge and a low-pressure rinse. Bosch's care interview, with Harald Sterzl, says water is fine if it is not from a steam cleaner, and that high pressure is a no-go on the motor bearings, the hubs, and the rear frame. Shimano's wash names the same family of parts to keep a hard jet off: hubs, pivot bearings, the headset, the seat tube, and every STEPS part. Rain on a ride is not the same as a nozzle held on a seal. An IP rating on a bike is not an IP rating on the motor unless the motor row says so. The XP4 versus Aventure 3 table prints IPX5 on both bikes. That code is the next section. It is not a sticker that says pressure washer.

Battery Removal

Bosch's maintenance page and the care interview both say take the battery off before you wash. If the pack does not come out, do not aim water at the dock, the charge port, or the rails. Wipe those with a damp cloth and then a dry one. Do not put a wet pack on the charger to see if it still works. The charging guide is the brick that belongs to the bike. The fire page is why a short in a damp dock is not a test. Put the pack somewhere dry, off the concrete, until the bike is dry too. A key turned off is not the same as the pack in your hand.

Protecting Electronics

If the display comes off, take it off. Bosch says a part that does not come off can be covered with a cloth or film. The Purion answer allows that display to stay on for a garden-hose rinse and forbids a direct high-pressure jet at the screen. Cover the buttons, the charge port, and any connector you can see. A silicone cover is not a seal you tested. Do not peel a connector apart to dry the pins with a tool. The maintenance guide is the rest of the weekly check. This page is only the water.

Products to Use

Bosch names bike shampoo from a dealer, and says a soap solution or washing-up liquid can be used if it is not aggressive and not strongly degreasing. Shimano's wash names a bike wash or Dawn in the bucket, and a bike degreaser or diluted Simple Green on the drivetrain only. The tools on both pages are a sponge, a brush, and a bucket. Shimano's list says the bucket should be at least two gallons. Two gallons is the bucket. It is not a volume you spray at the motor. A soft brush does the work. The water carries the dirt off.

Products to Avoid

Skip the steam cleaner and the high-pressure cleaner. Bosch names both. Skip a household degreaser on the paint, the plastics, and the seals. The drivetrain degreaser stays on the chain, the cassette, and the chainring. It does not go on the rotor, the pads, or the display. Do not spray a water-displacing solvent down the charge port and call it drying. Do not open the motor can, the hub, or the battery case to rinse the inside. Those are shop jobs, and a rinsed pack is not a repair.

Why Pressure Washers Are Risky

The IPX5 numbers are the IEC 60529 test: a 6.3 mm nozzle, 12.5 liters a minute, from about 2.5 to 3 meters, for at least three minutes, at a nozzle pressure of about 30 kPa. Thirty kPa is about 4.4 psi. A consumer washer advertised at 2,000 psi is a different machine. Two thousand times 6.895 is about 13,800 kPa. Thirteen thousand eight hundred divided by 30 is about 460.

Cleaning the Drivetrain

Do this before the soapy sponge, so you are not washing oil onto the rotor. Shimano's sequence is degreaser on the chain while you turn the cranks, then the cassette, then wait, and keep the spray off the disc. A brush in the cassette does more than a jet. Rinse that area with the low-pressure hose or a bottle, not a lance. A mid-drive sends motor torque through this chain. A hub does not, but your legs still do. The motor guide is that split. Either way, a dry, dirty chain is the part you will replace first.

Cleaning Brakes

Bosch says disc brakes are extremely sensitive to liquids and grease, and that chain lube must not touch the disc. Shimano says if you used Dawn rather than a bike wash, wash the rotors with a clean sponge and water. Do not soak the pads. Do not spray degreaser at the caliper and hope the next stop burns it off. A contaminated pad squeals and then it does not stop. The brake guide is pad material and rotor size. This page's rule is only: soap and water on the rotor, nothing oily, and a bed-in after the bike is dry if the lever feels wrong.

Cleaning the Motor Area

Brush mud off the motor shell, the crank seal, and the hub. Do not hold a jet on the seam where the crank meets a mid-drive, or on the axle of a hub. Bosch's reason is bearings. A hub motor and a mid-drive both have them. The difference is where you are pointing. The hub versus mid-drive page is the rest of that map. Regen, a throttle, and a watt rating do not make a seal into a drain. If the motor was submerged, stop and take it to a shop. Do not power it on to see.

Drying

Shake water out of the frame and the pedals. Towel the dock, the display, the connectors, and the chain. Leave the bike in the air, out of the sun if the pack is still nearby, until the rails are dry to a finger. Do not bake the pack, do not set it on a heater, and do not use compressed air inside a connector. A leaf blower on the frame is not a pressure washer. It is also not a substitute for a towel on the contacts. The pack goes back only when those contacts are dry.

Lubrication

Lube the chain after it is dry, not while the degreaser is still wet. One drop on each roller, then wipe the outside so the lube stays in the rollers and not on your leg. Bosch's third care tip is the same warning as the brake section: no lubricant on the disc. If a drop hits the rotor, clean that rotor with isopropyl alcohol on a clean rag before you ride. Do not lube the brake pads to quiet a squeal. That is how a wash becomes a new set of pads.

Post-Wash Inspection

Bosch's last step is a function test. The battery has to click in and stay there. The drive has to run. The buttons have to answer. Then the brakes, the lights, the bolts, and the tire pressure, which is the checklist the maintenance page already keeps. Squeeze each lever before you roll. If the lever comes to the bar, do not ride it to the shop. Walk it. A wash that leaves the bike quieter is the point. A wash that leaves water in the dock is the failure. Paul Lange and Co., the Shimano distributor, 5 November 2019. Four minutes 25 seconds. Guido Tschugg, in German. The description says not to wash with a high-pressure jet, and to keep that jet off the charge socket and the motor. It then names a Shimano bike wash and a chain lube at the end. It is not Bosch's English page, and it is not a test from 2026. The rule matches the page this desk opened.

Questions people ask

Can you pressure wash an e-bike?+

Bosch's maintenance page says no steam jet and no high-pressure cleaner, because water can enter the drive. A garden hose on low is the jet the Purion answer allows. IPX5 is a 6.3 mm test nozzle at about 30 kPa, about 4.4 psi. A washer advertised at 2,000 psi is about 460 times that pressure.

Should the battery come off before washing?+

Yes, when it comes off. Bosch says remove the battery and the display first, and cover a display that does not come off. Do not charge a pack until the contacts are dry.

What soap is safe on an e-bike?+

Bosch names a bike shampoo, or a mild washing-up liquid that is not strongly degreasing. Shimano's wash names a bike wash or Dawn in the bucket, and a drivetrain degreaser only on the chain and cassette. Keep that degreaser off the brake rotor.

What should you check after the bike is dry?+

Bosch's function test: the battery clicks in, the drive runs, and the buttons answer. Then the brakes, the lights, the bolts, and the tire pressure. If a brake lever pulls to the bar, do not ride it.
