Luna Cycle Luna X-1 / BBQ: Everything You Need to Know

The list pairs Luna X-1 with BBQ. Electrek’s 2019 X-1 was a carbon enduro at $3,450 from $4,200. Luna’s live carts are the X2 and the X2.5. This desk found no product titled BBQ.

The short answer

Luna X-1 / BBQ is a slash, not one bike. Electrek on 21 June 2019 described a carbon enduro at $3,450 from $4,200, a Bafang M600, and a pack called 14.5Ah and 700 watt-hours at 52 volts. Luna’s homepage now sells an X2 at $3,950 from $4,200 and an X2.5 at $4,370 from $4,600. No page this desk opened is titled BBQ.

Luna X-1 / BBQ is a list slash, not one motorcycle. Luna Cycle, in El Segundo, still sells kits and complete bikes. Electrek’s 21 June 2019 piece is the X-1 Enduro FS: a carbon full-suspension bike, promotional price $3,450 from an MSRP of $4,200, a Bafang M600, a pack described as 14.5 amp-hours and 700 watt-hours at 52 volts with Panasonic GA cells, and a Ludicrous option at 2,000 watts beside a 750-watt mode. The homepage this desk read does not sell that complete bike. It sells an X2 at $3,950 from $4,200 and an X2.5 at $4,370 from $4,600. A packs page still titles a replacement battery LUNA X1, at $550. No cart on the homepage, the packs page, or the about page is named BBQ. The row links here.

The 2019 X-1 was an enduro with pedals, not a pit bike. This is not a product photo.

What the slash is, and what the shop sells instead

Electrek and New Atlas on the 2019 bike, Luna’s live X2 and X2.5 cards, and a search for the second name. Do not average the watt-hour labels.

What is printed
X-1, 2019Electrek: $3,450 from $4,200, M600, 700 Wh, 52V, Panasonic GA, 14.5 Ah, Ludicrous 2,000 W or a 750 W mode with a throttle. New Atlas: the same 14.5 Ah and 700 Wh, and a weight of 50 lb. A French write-up printed 22.6 kg and 13.5 Ah while still saying 700 Wh. Sizes on the launch: 15.5, 17.5, 19.5, and 21 inches. Fork 160 mm. Rear shock 200 mm.
Volts versus the labelFifty-two times 14.5 is 754, not 700. Forty-eight times 14.5 is 696, which is the 700 line within a rounding. The live X2 card says its pack is 20 percent larger than the X1, at 17.5 Ah. That points back near 14.6 Ah. The X2 voltage printed now is 48, not the 52 in the 2019 story.
X2, liveSale $3,950 from $4,200. M600 called 750 W and over 95 Nm, throttle plus five assist levels, Class 2 Pedelec in the table. Pack 48V 17.5 Ah, labeled 820 Wh. Forty-eight times 17.5 is 840. Weight 58 lb for a medium. Travel 160 mm front and 140 mm rear. Range claim 30 to 40 miles with moderate pedaling. Electrek’s 10 August 2023 review printed 48V 18.5 Ah, 2.5 kW, 58 lb, and a markdown near $4,000.
X2.5, liveSale $4,370 from $4,600. Same motor family on 60V, 14 Ah LG MJ1, also labeled 820 Wh. Sixty times 14 is 840. The controller line is up to 50 battery amps in 20-second bursts. Sixty times 50 is 3,000 watts. The card does not print 3,000. It prints the amp cap and “50 percent plus” more torque. Weight again 58 lb for a medium. Limit 250 lb.
BBQNot a title on the pages this desk opened. The kit side of the shop is BBSHD and BBS02. Those letters are not this abbreviation. A Banana complete bike uses a BBSHD and a 52V 13.5 Ah Wolf pack, at $2,695. Fifty-two times 13.5 is 702, and that card does not print watt-hours. Do not rename the Banana.
ClassThe X2 table says Class 2. A nearby sentence says non-Ludicrous mode is Class 1 on trails. A throttle is not Class 1. A 750-watt continuous rating is not under 750 watts. Ludicrous, whether the 2019 2,000-watt pedal-only option or the later amp burst at the thumb, is not a bicycle. Pedals are on these frames. The watt line is the failure.

An Endless Sphere thread recorded a Bafang reply that the M600 is the 500-watt motor and the M620 is the 750-watt motor. Luna’s pages call the M600 750 watts, and the 2019 story added a 2,000-watt mode. Do not average 500, 750, and 2,000. The 2019 Ludicrous option was described as pedal-assist only. The later controller copy puts burst amps at the throttle. Those are different builds.

Two live cards both print 820 watt-hours. One is 48 volts and 17.5 amp-hours. The other is 60 volts and 14. The products are 840 either way.

Who it is for

Buy an X2 or an X2.5 if you wanted Luna’s carbon enduro and the cart in front of you names that bike, and you have read which controller is installed. Skip the slash if you were shopping for a pit bike, or for a model titled BBQ. The class chart is why 750 watts plus a thumb is already off the bicycle line, and why Ludicrous is further off. The watt-hour page is why 820 is the label and 840 is the multiplication, twice.

Questions people ask

Why is 700 watt-hours a suspicious label?+

Fifty-two times 14.5Ah equals 754, not 700. Forty-eight times that amp-hour figure equals 696, close to the printed 700. The live X2 card says its tank is 20 percent larger than the older bike, at 17.5Ah, which points back near 14.6. The voltage on that successor is 48, not the 52 in the launch story.

Why do two live cards share one energy label?+

The X2 prints 48 volts, 17.5Ah, and 820 watt-hours. Forty-eight times 17.5 equals 840. The X2.5 prints 60 volts, 14Ah, and the same 820. Sixty times 14 equals 840 as well. Electrek’s 2023 review of the first successor printed 18.5Ah and 2.5 kilowatts. Do not average 17.5 and 18.5.

Is there a model whose name is those three letters?+

Not on the homepage, the packs index, or the about page. The kit catalog is BBSHD and BBS02 hardware. A Banana complete bike uses that mid-drive and a 52-volt Wolf pack of 13.5Ah, priced at $2,695. Fifty-two times 13.5 equals 702, and the card skips watt-hours. Do not rename the Banana.

Does Class 2 on the X2 table survive the motor line?+

The table says Class 2 Pedelec. A nearby sentence says the non-upgraded mode is Class 1 on trails. A throttle is not Class 1. A 750-watt continuous claim is not under 750. The 2019 upgrade was described as pedal-only at 2,000 watts. Later copy puts burst amps on the thumb. Pedals are present. The watt line is the failure.
