Cargo E-Bikes: 200 Kilograms Is Not 381 Pounds

A Tern GSD is 200 kilograms gross, rider plus bike plus cargo. Times 2.2, that is 440 pounds. Wirecutter, in July 2026, said 381 pounds in all. A rider’s film says 400. A front box, a compact longtail, and a trike are not that number, and none of them is a car.

The short answer

A cargo e-bike is a gross weight, a rack limit, and a place for the load. Tern’s GSD is 200 kilograms, rider plus bike plus cargo, which is 440 pounds at 2.2. Wirecutter, in July 2026, said 381 pounds in all. A year-in review says 400. A front-loader is not that longtail, and a trike’s 75-pound rear rack is not a child seat.

A cargo e-bike is a gross weight, a rack limit, and a place for the load. The place is either behind the rider, in a box in front, between two rear wheels, or on a short deck. Those are four bikes. This desk did not load them. The numbers below are the ones already filed here, plus two outside sentences that do not match. The shopping list with the model names is the earlier cargo page. This page is how to read it.

Gross and payload are not the same word. A blank is a number this desk has not filed for that bike. The Wirecutter and film rows are not Tern’s card.

BikeThe limit as filedWhat it is
Tern GSD200 kg gross. Times 2.2 is 440 lb. The older page says about 441.Rider + bike + cargo. Parks vertically. $4,999 / $5,799.
Wirecutter, 9 July 2026381 lb in all. Up to 220 lb on the GSD rear rack.Their test line. Not the 200 kg card.
A rider’s film, 12 June 2026He says a 400 lb capacity. About $6,000 out the door, about $7,500 with the second battery. One year in Los Angeles. Not a spec.
Tern HSD, 15 July 2026419 lb gross. Atlas H rack 176 lb. From $4,999.The compact longtail. Gross, not a rack.
Globe Haul STAbout 419 lb, filed here as payload. About 700 W, 90 Nm, 772 Wh. Near $2,800.A hub longtail. Payload is not the word used for the GSD.
Segway Muxi Pro418 lb payload. 750 W hub. $1,999.99.Groceries and one light passenger. Not two kids in a box.
Lectric XP Trike 2415 lb total. 330 rider, 30 front, 75 rear. The rear rack is groceries. Not a child seat.
Lemmo 380 kg rear, 20 kg front, rider up to 120 kg. No single gross.A reservation for spring 2027. Not a shop bike.

Longtail

A longtail puts the load on a deck behind the saddle. The Tern GSD is the one this desk already names for two kids: Bosch, a 500 or a 1,000 watt-hour pack, Magura MT5 four-piston brakes, and a gross of 200 kilograms. The Globe Haul ST is the hub version of the idea, filed here near $2,800 with about 419 pounds of payload. A Lectric XPedition 2, from $1,399 on the earlier page, is the cheap longtail. It does not inherit the GSD’s 200 kilograms. If the listing does not print a gross, it does not have the GSD’s gross.

Front Loader

A front-loader puts a box ahead of the rider. The Urban Arrow Family, on the earlier page, is that box, sized there as two to three kids, with a Bosch Cargo Line and a rain-cover ecosystem. This desk still does not have one gross weight for that Family. Wirecutter, updated 9 July 2026, writes a different front-loader, the FamilyNext Pro, at 276 pounds in the box and up to 439 pounds total. Do not paste 439 onto the Family, and do not paste the Family’s missing gross onto the Pro. The wheelbase is the point. You see the children. You also steer a box. It does not stand up in a hallway.

Compact Cargo

Compact is a shorter deck, not a smaller law. Tern’s HSD, announced 15 July 2026, is 419 pounds gross and a 176-pound Atlas H rack, from $4,999. The Segway Muxi Pro is 418 pounds of payload at $1,999.99. Four hundred nineteen and 418 are one pound apart and they are not the same sentence. Gross includes the bike. Payload, the way this desk has used it on the Haul and the Muxi, is the load the maker is willing to name. Read the word on the sticker you are holding. The Muxi page is the short-tail. The HSD is the compact Tern.

Cargo Trike

A trike does not ask you to balance the load. The XP Trike 2 is 415 pounds total, of which 330 is the rider, 30 is the front basket, and 75 is the rear rack. Seventy-five pounds is groceries. It is not two children and a 200-kilogram gross. A front-loader trike is a third shape, a box between two wheels, and this page will not give it the Arrow’s job unless the maker prints a child-seat list. Three wheels change the footprint and the lean. They do not change the class of the motor.

Cargo e-bike graphic: longtail, front loader, compact cargo, and trike, with a Tern GSD 200 kg gross shown as about 441 lb
The sheet on this page. Two hundred kilograms times 2.2 is 440 pounds. Two hundred divided by 0.4536 is 440.9, which rounds to the 441 this graphic prints, and to the “about 441” on the older page. That 200 kilograms is Tern’s gross for a GSD: the bike, the rider, and the cargo. Wirecutter’s July line is 381 pounds in all. One rider’s film says 400. Do not average them. Gross is not payload, and a rack limit is a third number inside the gross. The four shapes do not share the GSD’s rating. Published cards, not a loaded ride.

Payload Ratings

Two hundred kilograms times 2.2 is 440 pounds. The earlier page rounded the GSD to about 441. Wirecutter’s July line is 381 pounds in all, and up to 220 on that rear rack. The June film says 400. Three numbers, one model name. This desk will not average them to 407. Use 200 kilograms when you mean Tern’s gross. Use 381 when you mean Wirecutter. Use 400 when you mean one owner. A rack rating is a second cap inside the gross. The HSD can say 419 pounds gross and still only allow 176 on the Atlas H rack. Exceeding either number is the same mistake.

Kids

A child is cargo with a seat-maker’s weight limit, a harness, and a helmet rule that does not care what the bike cost. The GSD is the longtail this site already points at for that job. The Arrow’s box is the front-loader version, two to three kids in the earlier description, not a promise that three of your children fit. On 1 October 2026 the CPSC recalled about 1,032 Urban Arrow bikes in the United States because a seat-post bolt can break. Nine damage reports, no injuries on that page. The recall is a free post, and it is not a reason to condemn every front box. It is a reason to stop riding a recalled one. Demo with the heavier adult and the seats on. An empty bike in a studio is not that test.

Groceries

A U.S. gallon of milk is about 8.6 pounds. Four gallons is about 34. That arithmetic fits a 75-pound rear rack with room left, and it is a boring way to read a sticker, not a shop this desk pushed a cart through. The Trike’s rear rack is that 75. Its front basket is 30. The HSD’s rack is 176, which is five times 34 with a few pounds left. The Lemmo’s page, still a reservation, says 80 kilograms on the rear, which is 176 pounds, and 20 kilograms, 44 pounds, on the front. A grocery run that fits the rack does not need a 200-kilogram longtail. A grocery run that does not fit the rack does not become legal because you want it to.

Dogs

A dog is weight, and the weight counts against the rack or the box that is actually rated. This desk does not have a filed dog limit for these bikes. A photo of a dog in a basket is not a rating. If the maker does not list a crate or a bag for the animal, do not invent one. The animal plus the crate has to sit inside the same number as the milk. A 75-pound rack that already holds 34 pounds of milk does not have a second, secret 75 for the dog.

Commercial Use

A delivery bag does not change the class. A Class 1, 2, or 3 bicycle used for work is still that bicycle, with that watt limit and that speed. A machine without pedals, or with a motor the statute does not allow, is not a cargo e-bike that belongs in the bike lane because a business bought it. Insurance for paying riders is not on this page, because no policy is filed here. The gross weight still applies when the cargo is someone else’s groceries. A 200-kilogram cap does not become a truck cap at the start of a shift.

Motor Requirements

A loaded hill is a gearing problem. A mid-drive, which is the Bosch on the GSD and the Cargo Line on the Arrow, can use the gears. A hub, which is the Haul at about 700 watts and 90 newton-meters, the Muxi at 750 watts, and the Trike, cannot. The hub and the mid-drive are the whole argument. Peak watts do not hold a 440-pound gross on a driveway. Low gears and a motor that is still inside its rated power do. This page will not invent a newton-meter for the Cargo Line. It is not on the card this desk has been using.

Battery Capacity

The GSD’s filed packs are 500 or 1,000 watt-hours, with claimed ranges of 32 to 62 miles on the single and 62 to 125 on the dual. One thousand divided by 125 is 8 watt-hours a mile. Five hundred divided by 32 is 15.6. The claim’s own spread is the load, the assist, and the stops. Children sit on the worse end of it. The range page is why a second battery is a second tank, not a doubling you can bank. The film’s rider bought that second battery. His all-in figure moved from about $6,000 to about $7,500. Six thousand subtracted from 7,500 is 1,500, and that gap is his accessories, not Tern’s price list.

Brakes

The GSD is filed with Magura MT5 four-piston brakes. Four pistons are a response to mass. They are not a distance this desk measured. A cargo bike that is 100 pounds heavier at the gross needs the rotor and the pad it was sold with. Swapping down to a smaller rotor to save weight is how a driveway becomes a story. The brake guide is the hardware. The rule here is simpler: the brake has to match the gross you just agreed to, including the seats.

Handling

Mass in front of the steering is a front-loader. It is stable in a straight line and it is a handful when the box is heavy and the turn is tight. Mass behind the saddle is a longtail. The bike follows. A bump under a child’s seat is a bump the rider feels late. A trike does not fall over at a stop, and it does not lean through the turn the other two use. None of that is a number. The test is the heavier adult, the real seats, and the parking lot you will actually turn in. An empty Abound in a studio, which is the photo on this page, is not that test.

Accessories

The accessories that change the bike are the second battery, the child seats, the rack that has its own pound rating, and the lock. A storm box and a rain cover are real products on these platforms. They are also weight, and the weight counts against the gross. Do not buy a cover and then forget to add it to the 440. The Abound’s security hardware is the ACU system already named on the earlier page. It is not a substitute for knowing the rack limit.

Weather Protection

The Arrow’s rain cover is the one this desk has already filed. It is fabric over a box. It is not a cabin, and it does not raise the gross. Rain on a rotor is a longer stop. Rain on a 1,000 watt-hour claim is the low end of that claim. A cargo bike replaces a trip in the weather you will actually ride. If that weather is a Florida afternoon and you will not ride it, the cover is a tent you store.

Parking

The GSD parks vertically. That is why the earlier page calls it the apartment bike. A front-loader does not. A trike does not. A car space is not a bike room, and a bike room with a low ceiling is not a vertical park. Look at the ceiling before you look at the motor. The photo on this page is an Abound on a studio floor, not a GSD on its end.

Car-Free Chronicles, 12 June 2026. One year without a car in Los Angeles, on a GSD. He says 400 pounds and about $7,500 all in. Tern’s card is 200 kilograms. This is not a scale.

Security

The GSD’s filed lock is an Abus wheel lock. A wheel lock is one lock. The other page on this site says two locks, and 10 to 15 percent of the bike’s price. Ten percent of the $4,999 GSD is $499.90. Fifteen percent is $749.85. The film’s out-the-door price was about $6,000, which is not the MSRP, so the lock budget on that receipt is not $500. A tracker is the GPS page. It does not replace the lock, and a lock does not replace the gross-weight sticker.

Cargo E-Bike vs Car

A cargo e-bike replaces a trip. It does not replace a car.

The trip it can take is a school run inside the seat ratings, or a grocery load inside the rack, at a distance inside the worse end of the watt-hour claim. The trip it cannot take is a highway, four adults, or a commute that is already too far on the low end of the range. One person in Los Angeles did without a car for a year on a GSD and would buy it again. That is his year. It cost him about $6,000 and then about $7,500. It is not a payment schedule, and it is not a reason to treat 400 pounds as Tern’s gross. Buy the shape that matches the load. Then believe the smaller of the two numbers on the sticker.

Questions people ask

How much can a cargo e-bike carry?+

The Tern GSD’s filed gross is 200 kilograms, rider plus bike plus cargo, which is 440 pounds. Wirecutter in July 2026 said 381 pounds in all. A June 2026 owner film says 400. Use the word on your sticker. Do not average them.

What is the difference between a longtail and a front-loader?+

A longtail puts the load behind the rider. A front-loader puts a box ahead of the steering. The GSD is the longtail. The Urban Arrow Family is the box. A front-loader does not park vertically. A longtail does not let you watch the children the same way.

Can a cargo e-bike replace a car?+

It can replace a trip that fits the rack, the seat ratings, and the low end of the range. It does not replace a highway, four adults, or a commute that is already too far. One Los Angeles rider went a year without a car on a GSD. That is his year, at about $7,500 all in.
