The short answer

The Segway Muxi Pro goes on sale in the U.S. on 22 September 2026 for $1,999.99. It is a short-tail cargo e-bike: 750W direct-drive hub (80 Nm), 716Wh battery, claimed 73 miles, 9-speed electronic auto-shift, 70 mm fork, 82.2 lb, 418 lb payload. Class 1, 2, or 3 in the Segway app (PAS to 28). No independent range test yet. Confirm UL 2849 on the hangtag.

The Segway Muxi Pro is the 2026 short-tail cargo e-bike Segway starts selling in the U.S. on 22 September 2026: $1,999.99, Anthracite or Reef Blue, Segway.com and authorized dealers. It keeps the swooping step-through Muxi frame and the 750W direct-drive rear hub motor (80 Nm), then adds the parts testers asked for on the $1,699 original Muxi — a 70 mm front fork, a 9-speed electronic cassette with automatic shifting (48T chainring, 11–36 cassette per Mike Fede’s 15 September first look), stock fenders, rear turn signals, and a Class 3 pedal-assist cap of 28 mph in the Segway app. Battery is 716Wh. Claimed range is 73 miles (117 km). Bike weight is 82.2 lb (37.3 kg). Total payload is 418 lb (190 kg); rider cap 265 lb; optional passenger kit 120 lb. Electrek (15 Sept 2026), Notebookcheck (same day), and Autoevolution published the press sheet. As of 21 September there is still no independent watt-hour loop on the Pro — treat 73 miles as Eco on the flat until someone publishes elevation. The original Muxi did ship UL 2849 / UL 2271 (Bikerumor, Feb 2026; Popular Science, July 2026). The Pro press kit has not printed that hangtag yet. Read the sticker on the 22 September store page before you buy into NYC or California.

Factory numbers. Original Muxi: Segway store + Bikerumor + Tom’s Guide (June 2026, ~100 miles over two months). Pro: Electrek, Notebookcheck, Autoevolution, 15 Sept 2026. Claimed range is a lab number, not a named tester. Peak watts were not published for either bike — 750W is the rated hub.

Muxi Pro — step-through short-tail, 20×3, 70 mm fork, 9-speed cassette. Segway press photo via the 15 September launch coverage. $1,999.99, on sale 22 September 2026.

The 9-speed that actually auto-shifts

The original Muxi is a single-speed direct-drive: 48T up front, 13T in back, a chain tensioner instead of a derailleur (Segway spec sheet). That is why Tom’s Guide (23 June 2026) and Popular Science (28 July 2026) both called it easy and also why Freshly Charged’s May review wanted gears and a fork. The Pro answers with a 9-speed electronic drivetrain that auto-shifts. Mike Fede’s 15 September sneak peek is the cassette number we have in public: 48-tooth chainring, 11-to-36 cassette. Electrek’s point is the useful one — the wider gearing is how Segway can advertise pedal assist to 28 mph without asking your knees to spin a 13T at Class 3. Automatic shifting at $2,000 is the trick that used to live on Bosch/Enviolo dealer bikes and Aventon Level 4 ADV. It is also a service item: a cassette, a derailleur, and software. Budget a shop the first time it skips, the same way this desk treats any e-bike maintenance with a clutch and a battery. Do not flash unofficial maps onto a grocery bike — controller tuning is an e-moto job, at your own risk, with a tech.

The fork is 70 mm, not a trail bike. Original Muxi: rigid (Segway: “No, with Rigid Fork”). PopSci’s con on the $1,699 bike was exactly that — you feel broken pavement. Seventy millimetres of coil is grocery-ruts and driveway lips, not mountain e-bike travel. Fenders and rear turn signals come on the bike, which is the difference between a $1,699 chassis plus a $150 accessory credit and a $1,999 complete. Notebookcheck lists a 600-lumen automatic headlight, rear brake light, optional dual baskets, optional rearview radar and mirror. The radar is already a Muxi accessory on Segway’s store ($99.99, Myon and Muxi, not Xafari/Xyber). Optional passenger kit is rated 120 lb (54 kg). Optional second passenger is a kid or a light adult on a short-tail, not a Tern GSD.

Freshly Charged, 15 Sept 2026. First look, not a range test. 70 mm fork, 9-speed electronic shift, rear turn signals, stock fenders. Full Pro review was promised, not published as of 21 September.

750 watts, 716 watt-hours, 73 miles on the brochure

Rated motor is 750W. Torque is 80 Nm. That is the same direct-drive rear hub Segway already sells on the Muxi — not a mid-drive, not a 1,310W peak Lectric title. Direct-drive is why regen, hill-descent control, and traction control exist: the motor is the flywheel. Geared hubs freewheel; this one can drag. Electrek: Hill Descent Control is the ICE-engine-braking analog so the bike does not keep accelerating downhill; Hill-Start Assist holds you on a grade; TCS looks for rear wheelspin. Those features were on the original Muxi (Freshly Charged, 21 May 2026; Segway spec). The Pro keeps them. Watts are not speed once class cuts in. 750W is the federal-shaped U.S. hangtag. Peak watts were not in the 15 September kit — do not invent them.

The tank is 716Wh (48V pack). Original Muxi is 717Wh. Watt-hours = volts × amp-hours; Ah without volts is a listing trick. Segway’s Pro claim is 73 miles / 117 km. Original Muxi claim is 80 miles. Autoevolution rounded that as “3 miles more than the standard Muxi,” which does not match Segway’s own 80-mile Muxi page — believe the store page for the original (80) and Electrek/Notebookcheck for the Pro (73). Neither number is a named tester with elevation. Tom’s Guide’s Muxi was a two-month, ~100-mile living-with-it piece, not a standardized drain-down. Outdoor Gear Lab’s XP4 19.1-mile loop is the kind of number that is still missing here. Halve 73 if you are 220 lb, in PAS 5, in the wind, with a loaded rack. Charge time on the original is about 6.5 hours (1.3A rated, 3.9A max). Pro charge time was not in the press kit. Charge with the matched brick. Store 40–80% if it sits. That is the battery fire rule, not a Segway slogan.

Short-tail cargo, not a bakfiets. Front basket 33 lb on the Muxi family; rear rack / passenger kit 120–121 lb. Segway lifestyle photo from the Pro launch set.

Class 1, 2, and 3 — the app is not the trailhead

Riders pick Class 1, Class 2, or Class 3 in the Segway app. Electrek: subject to local law. Original Muxi: Class 1 PAS 20, Class 2 throttle 20, Class 3 PAS 23, plus a hybrid (throttle 20 / PAS 23) where that is legal — Segway’s own asterisk names California and New York as restricted. The Pro’s new number is PAS to 28. That is the model-law Class 3 ceiling, not a New York City street. NYC still caps every e-bike at 15 mph. Pinellas is 20. The Tampa Riverwalk is 15. Orange County bans Class 3 on paved county trails. A 28 mph unlock on a 15 mph greenway is a ticket, not a spec. Speed limits are the sign. Federal 15 U.S.C. § 2085 still wants pedals, a motor under 750W, and motor-only under 20 mph for the product to be a bicycle. Throttle to 20 and PAS to 28 is the 2026 DTC hybrid a lot of brands ship. It does not rewrite a ranger.

Florida still treats a legal Class 1–3 as a bicycle — no license, plate, or insurance (e-biking in Florida). Helmet under 16. Cities still own sidewalks. Do not take a Class 3 Pro onto a path that posted 15 and argue with the hangtag. New Jersey, as of 19 July 2026, no longer uses the three-class labels the same way. If you ride there, the app toggle is not the statute. How to choose the right e-bike still starts with the route, not the menu.

Mike Fede, 15 Sept 2026. $1,999, 70 mm fork, 9-speed electronic auto-shift, 48T / 11–36, Anthracite and Reef Blue, on sale 22 September. Sneak peek, not a dyno.

Cargo math: 418 pounds is the bike plus you plus stuff

418 lb is total payload, not rider-only. Rider cap is 265 lb (120 kg). Original Muxi rear rack 121 lb (55 kg), front basket 33 lb (15 kg), passenger kit on that rear rating. Pro press repeats 418 total and a 120 lb passenger kit. If you plus the kid plus the groceries plus the 82 lb bike exceed 418, the axle is the limit, not the motor. This is a compact short-tail, wheelbase in the original geometry sheet around 45 inches — not a Tern GSD (200 kg GVW, parks vertically) and not a Trek Fetch+ box. Lectric XPedition 2 (from $1,399, EBR’s cargo value) is the longtail at this budget. Specialized Globe Haul ST (~$2,800, ~419 lb) is the hub longtail with more room. Aventon Abound SR/LR is the family rack with ACU. The Muxi Pro is the stylish 20-inch grocery bike with a passenger peg set, not two kids in a crate. Shop the heavier adult on the demo with the seats on. That is the how to choose cargo rule, copied here because people skip it.

82.2 lb is the Pro. Original Muxi is 72.75 lb. The extra ~9–10 lb is the fork, cassette, derailleur, fenders, signals. You roll it. You do not carry it up a fourth-floor walk-up every day — that job is still a Brompton or a 35 lb city bike, not a cargo chassis. Tom’s Guide’s closest cross-shop on the original was the RadRunner: similar payload, Class 3 28 mph, front suspension, shorter claimed range, now living under Life EV after the March 2026 $13.2 million buy. The Pro is Segway aiming at that RadRunner slot with better software. It is not a Lectric XP4 folder (~70 lb, 20×3, $999/$1,299) and not a Ninebot Max G3 scooter. Pedals, 750W, 20-inch wheels. Bicycle. Unless you derestrict it, at your own risk, and then it is a problem for a deputy.

Segway Muxi Pro cargo e-bike with front basket parked on a city street
Stock fenders and the optional basket kit. Front basket in the Muxi family is 33 lb. Center basket is a Pro-launch accessory, not a second child seat.

Find My, AirLock, regen — and the year-two bill

Segway’s pitch is the electronics stack, not a Bosch dealer motor. Apple Find My, 4G GPS tracking, proximity AirLock, Lost Mode, OTA updates, a color TFT with navigation, theft alarm. Freshly Charged’s May Muxi review called that stack the reason to care at $1,699: AirLock proximity unlock, hub lock, battery-swap detection, optional rear radar. Electrek on the Pro: some connected features require a subscription after the first year. Read the fine print on GPS before you treat “Find My” as free forever. Display is 2.4-inch, IPX7; body IPX5 (Notebookcheck). IPX5 is rain, not a pressure washer. IPX7 is the pack and the screen. Bring the pack inside in Florida heat and in a freeze — maintenance still wants that, and heat is why Tampa packs sag in August.

Lights after dark are a bicycle rule in every state. 600 lumens automatic headlight plus turn signals is the kit, not a helmet substitute. CPSC 16 CFR 1203 on your head. Class 3 adults still need a helmet in California and a dozen other jurisdictions. Two locks, 10–15% of $2,000. AirLock is a complement, not a Kryptonite. Hydraulic 180s at 82 lb plus cargo are why you do not cheap out on a bleed. Work with a shop. At your own risk if you home-bleed a loaded cargo bike and then put a kid on the rack.

What testers already know about the Muxi — not the Pro

No named desk has published a Pro range loop as of 21 September 2026. What exists is the original Muxi, same motor and almost the same pack, minus the fork and the cassette. Freshly Charged (full review 21 May 2026, 20 minutes, oEmbed live): GPS, AirLock, TCS, regen, hill descent, optional radar, 418 lb payload, passenger kit they actually sat on; verdict was urban pavement, not off-road, and they wanted the suspension the Pro now has. Tom’s Guide (23 June 2026): ~100 miles over two months, fun short-tail, not a full cargo bike, $1,699 or $2,224 loaded with accessories, closest rival the RadRunner. Popular Science (28 July 2026): stylish, UL 2271/2849 on that bike, MIK-compatible rear rack, learning curve on the joystick and app, battery sag if it sits, no suspension. Bikerumor (27 Feb 2026 launch spec): UL 2271 & 2849, IPX7 pack/display, IPX5 body, 72.75 lb. Use those reviews to understand the chassis. Do not paste their range onto the Pro’s 73-mile claim.

Freshly Charged, 21 May 2026, 20:30. This is the original single-speed Muxi, not the Pro. Same hub family and smart stack. Watch it for AirLock, regen, and who should skip a rigid 20-inch cargo bike. The Pro is the fork-and-cassette version of this.

Path speed is the posted number. Class 3 PAS at 28 on a 15 mph greenway is not what this bike is for. Segway lifestyle photo, Pro launch set.

Who should buy it — and who should wait

Buy the Muxi Pro if you want a $2,000 short-tail that auto-shifts, soaks driveway cuts, carries groceries or one light passenger, and you already live in Segway’s app. It is the Muxi testers asked Segway to ship. Skip it if you need two kids every day — that is still a longtail or a box (cargo ebikes). Skip it if you need a named range test before you spend two grand; wait for Electric Bike Report or Freshly Charged’s promised Pro review. Skip it if you thought “cargo” meant a Tern HSD Bosch dealer bike from $4,999. Skip it if you need a fold — XP4. Skip it if you need a trail mid-drive. Skip it if NYC or California sales law is why you shop, until the Pro hangtag shows UL 2849 / 2271 in the product photos. The original Muxi had it. The Pro should. Screenshots of a sibling bike are not a certification.

73 miles is a lab Eco number. 28 mph is a menu. 82 pounds is the bike. The sign on the path is still the law.

Versus the $1,699 Muxi: you are paying $300 for a fork, a cassette, stock fenders, turn signals, and a 28 mph Class 3 cap instead of 23. If your city is 20 mph paths and you never wanted gears, the original Muxi is still the lighter, cheaper bike and it is in stock. Versus how to buy: class vs route, frame label, UL, watts, who bleeds the brakes. Segway has dealers plus mail. Hydraulics and auto-shift want a shop. Versus the 2026 launches that shipped: this one actually has a price, a date, and a motor name. Tomorrow, 22 September, is the buy button. Today is the spec sheet. If you only remember one line: Muxi Pro, $1,999.99, 750W direct-drive hub, 716Wh, claimed 73 miles, 9-speed auto-shift, 70 mm fork, 82.2 lb, 418 lb payload, Class 1–3 in the app to 28, on sale 22 September 2026, no independent drain-down yet, confirm UL on the hangtag. That is everything you need to know until someone publishes a loop with elevation. Then we update the range line and leave the rest.

Questions people ask

When does the Segway Muxi Pro go on sale?+

U.S. sales start 22 September 2026 at $1,999.99, Anthracite or Reef Blue, from Segway and authorized dealers (Electrek, Notebookcheck, 15 Sept 2026).

What is the difference between the Muxi and Muxi Pro?+

Same 750W / 80 Nm hub family. Pro adds a 70 mm fork, 9-speed electronic auto-shift (48T / 11–36), stock fenders and rear turn signals, Class 3 PAS to 28 instead of 23, and about 10 lb. Original Muxi is $1,699.99 and 72.75 lb.

What is the Muxi Pro’s real range?+

Unknown. Segway claims 73 miles from 716Wh. No Electric Bike Report, Outdoor Gear Lab, or Freshly Charged drain-down exists as of 21 September 2026. Treat 73 as Eco on the flat. Original Muxi claimed 80.

Is the Muxi Pro a Class 3 e-bike?+

In the app, yes — riders can pick Class 1, 2, or 3. PAS to 28 mph is Class 3. Throttle stays a 20 mph product. The trailhead sign still wins: NYC 15, many paths 20, Orange County Class 3 banned.

Is the Muxi Pro UL 2849 certified?+

The original Muxi shipped UL 2271 and UL 2849 (Bikerumor, Popular Science). The 15 September Pro press kit did not print that mark. Confirm the hangtag on the 22 September store page before NYC or California.

Can the Muxi Pro carry a passenger?+

Optional passenger kit is rated 120 lb. Total payload 418 lb, rider 265 lb. It is a short-tail grocery bike, not a Tern GSD two-kid longtail.
