Advanced Controller Tuning

Phase amps are torque. Battery amps are the pack’s throat. Field weakening is extra RPM you pay for in heat. The app is not a dyno, and it is not a Class 2.

By SickEBike desk

The short answer

Phase amps are low-speed torque. Battery (DC) amps are how hard you pull the pack. Field weakening buys rpm and heat — EBMX notes 100% FW can add ~300 battery amps on top of the limit you set. Start around 300 phase / 70 battery / 50% FW on an X-9000, tell the wizard the truth about the pack, and stop when the motor can is too hot to touch. This is e-moto work, not a Class 2 unlock. Do it at your own risk with a qualified technician.

Advanced controller tuning is not a Level 4 menu that unlocks Class 3. It is an aftermarket brain — EBMX X-9000, Torp TC1000, FarDriver on a Heybike Villain — that decides how many amps the motor and the pack are allowed to trade. Watts still equal volts times battery amps. That equation is in volts, amps, and watt-hours. The app just lets you lie to it. This desk will not publish a “max everything” screenshot. We will name the three sliders that matter, the 2026 boxes people actually buy, and the legal line that does not move when you pair Bluetooth. Brakes and rubber first: the mods list.

What the three sliders actually are

Battery current (DC amps, “line amps” in some FarDriver menus) is how hard you pull on the pack. A 72-volt Light Bee at 70 battery amps is about 5 kW at the bus. At 200 A it is about 14 kW. The BMS and the discharge rating of the cells decide whether that number is a tune or a melted Anderson. EBMX’s own app guide is blunt: the stock Sur-Ron power plug is rated 240 A DC for about ten seconds. Longer than that and the connector welds itself. Do not set “unlimited” because a forum said the MOSFETs can take it. The plug is the fuse you did not install.

Phase current (motor amps) is torque at walking speed. EBMX’s X Series app guide (v1.0): phase amps are most noticeable at low rpm and fall as speed rises; they are the torque slider. You can run high phase with moderate battery current because the controller multiplies current in the windings. That is why a trail tune is “heavy phase, polite battery” (Epic Cycles, February 2026). The cost is heat in the stator. A stock Light Bee X motor was not wound for 900 A phase. It will go. Then it will smell.

Field weakening (FW) raises the motor’s rpm ceiling by shrinking the magnetic field so back-EMF does not clamp the top end. Speed goes up. Efficiency and cooling go down. REVRides’ X-9000 install note: 50% is a sane start; more FW is more top speed and more heat. EBMX’s PDF is the number shops quote: 100% field weakening can add up to 300 battery amps on top of the battery-amp setting you thought you locked. You did not lock it. The controller will exceed the kW number on the same page when FW and high phase are both on. That is not a bug. That is how FOC works.

Named 2026 aftermarket boxes this desk sees on Light Bee / Talaria / E-Ride / Villain builds. Peak figures are manufacturer or dealer ratings, not a SickEBike dyno. Stock Sur-Ron / Talaria controllers are the baseline you are replacing.

The controller is the valve. Phase amps heat this can. Battery amps heat the pack and the plug. Field weakening heats both so you can hold a higher rpm.

EBMX: the builder’s box

REVRides’ install sheet is the checklist shops still use: EBMX X-Tune app, Bluetooth PIN 123456, vehicle preset (Light Bee X, MX3/MX4/XXX, E-Ride Pro SS 2.0/3.0), battery preset (16S 60V stock or 20S 72V), throttle calibration, hall-sensor wizard with the rear wheel in the air. Then power modes. Their starting map: 300 phase / 70 battery. Work up. Do not start at 900/500 because the box is rated for it. Epic Cycles (25 February 2026) puts EBMX on high-voltage custom builds and Torp on riders who want to keep talking to the stock BMS. That split is the useful one.

The wizard will ask for motor and pack. Be boring. EBMX limits kW in the app based on what you selected; set 25 kW on a pack that cannot support it and the number falls back. There is an “unlimited” battery-current path behind a password they will give if they believe you know the plug melts at 240 A. Talaria Boys’ X-9000 walkthrough (still the English-language setup clip) is the same order: bike type, motor type, battery, then race 1/2/3 as kW plus phase. On an MX4 they showed factory-ish race maps around 10 kW / 400 phase, 12 kW / 500, 15 kW / 600 — already more than stock — and then added phase for torque. That is a 2023 clip on a then-current MX4. Treat the numbers as a shape, not a 2026 flash file.

July 2025. V3 app: battery model, street vs race current limits, three kW / phase maps. Autosave. This is the UI, not a dyno sheet. Watch the battery page before you touch Race 3.
October 2023, 20k+ views. Bike type, motor type, throttle wizard, race maps as kW + phase amps. Still the setup order. Your 2026 MX4 and a 72V Light Bee are different packs — copy the process, not the screenshot.

Torp: stock functions, then power

Torp’s own TC1000 2.0 page (2026): plug-and-play on Light Bee, Ultra Bee, Talaria MX3/MX4/MX5. Stock 60V up to 80V nominal 22S (92.4V full). 50 kW, 700 A battery, 1,000 A phase, FOC, halls or sensorless, Bluetooth, a harness ECU so OEM regen, lights, and dash tricks stay alive. That last sentence is why people pay Torp instead of EBMX: you do not orphan the bike’s brain. Traction control was listed for February 2026 on 1.X and 2.X. The HV version (26S, 110V full, up to 96.2V nominal) was listed for spring 2026. If you are on a stock 72V 35Ah MY26 Light Bee and you want maps plus the stock BMS talking, this is the box Epic Cycles called “stock plus.”

TC500 exists for riders who are not going to a KO motor and a 40 kW weekend. Luna Cycle’s 2024 controller roundup put TC500 around 25 kW / 500 A phase and argued TC1000 money is EBMX money for a full build. That is an opinion video, not a lab. The spec sheet is Torp’s. Buy the current Torp can handle after the battery you actually have, not the one in the cart.

FarDriver on the Villain (and other minis)

The Villain already ships with a FarDriver you can talk to. Voltron Watts (March 2026) walked the official app: communications tab, Pro BLE, factory line amps at 70, bumped to 80 because the can is rated 80. He left pole pairs and throttle map alone — “you shouldn’t either unless you know.” Ratios/speed to 100% across the rpm range. GPS on the phone after the change: about 45 mph. RiderGuide’s published Villain test was already 44.3 mph GPS stock. One clip is not a new world record. It is a reminder that minis are app-tunable out of the box, and that a $30 dongle plus a 100% speed curve is how people cook a 14-inch wheeled 4 kW bike. Comments on those shorts are not a cooling spec.

A Tuttio Soleil01 is not automatically a FarDriver. Do not flash a Villain map onto a different FOC. Pole pairs, hall angles, and current shunts are motor-specific. Wrong poles = a doorstop that gets hot. If the mini has no documented app, you do not have a tune. You have a YouTube comment.

A map that does not cook the motor

Start below the dealer preset, not above it. REVRides: 300 phase / 70 battery, FW 50%. Ride a loop you know. Touch the motor can and the controller case. If you cannot hold a hand on the can, you are done adding phase. If the pack sags hard or the plug is warm, you are done adding battery amps. Then add one thing: a little phase for trail torque, or a little FW for a top-speed road you should not be on anyway. Never both on the same afternoon.

Street / eco maps exist so a friend can swing a leg over without hitting 15 kW. January 2026 Ultra Bee + EBMX clip (stock pack, stock motor, TB Electric maps): mode 1 about 10 kW, mode 2 about 15, mode 3 they were willing to show 27 kW and noted TB had run 25 on stock hardware. That is a YouTuber on an Ultra Bee, not a Light Bee, not a Tuttio, and not a recommendation. Copy the idea — three maps, tame first — not the 27.

January 2026. Stock Ultra Bee pack and motor, EBMX, three modes as kW. Eco already violent. This is an Ultra Bee. A Light Bee stator is smaller. Do not paste 27 kW onto a 2026 10 kW can.

Regen is a brake. Torp keeps OEM regen; EBMX lets you set it; FarDriver has a curve. High regen on dirt is a rear tire that swaps ends. Pair any of this with the Sur-Ron brake sequence if you raised kW: sintered pads, then rotor, then a caliper that can eat the heat the motor now makes. A 203 mm four-piston was sized for 10 kW, not for Race 3.

Class 2 apps are not this article

Aventon, Lectric, and Bosch Flow let you pick Class 2 vs 3, torque vs cadence, sometimes a watt cap. That is firmware the brand still warrants. It is not phase-amp tuning. Unlocking 28 mph on a Class 2 where the path is posted 15–20 — Pinellas, Riverwalk — is a sign, not a map. Swapping a 750W hub controller for a 30 A “1,000W” sine-wave brick is the vecharged 2025 warning: you left 15 U.S.C. § 2085. Pedals, under 750W, motor-only under 20 mph is the federal bicycle. A Tuttio and a Light Bee already failed that test. Tuning them harder does not make them less illegal on a bike path. It makes them hotter.

ASI BAC / EggRider / Phaserunner lives on DIY mid-drives. Field weakening there is often capped (one 2023 Phaserunner V6 test stuck at 25% FW in firmware). Voltage still has to match. A 48V controller on a 52V pack is a funeral for the FETs. If you are on a Bosch CX, there is no user phase-amp screen. Performance Upgrade 2.0 (from 4 May 2026) is the factory software bump — 120 Nm situational on CX/CX-R, 750 W peak. That is the opposite of this article.

Talaria Sting R MX4 electric dirt bike
Talaria Sting R MX4 — official dealer photo. 8 kW stock, gearbox, 60V 45Ah. EBMX and Torp both list it. The gearbox already hits; the controller is extra current through the same motor.

The desk order, one more time

Pegs, tires, pads, rotor. Then a controller. Then a map that names the pack you have, not the pack on Instagram. Tell the wizard the truth. Leave pole pairs alone. Log motor temp if the app has it. Budget a matched charger and a BMS that can actually discharge the amps you typed. Private land. Full-face. If the can is too hot to touch, the tune is finished — even if Race 3 still has a slider.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between phase amps and battery amps?+

Battery (DC / line) amps are pack current — watts ≈ volts × battery amps. Phase amps are motor-winding current, which is the torque you feel off the line. You can run high phase with moderate battery current. The stator still gets hot.

What does field weakening do on an EBMX or Torp?+

It raises rpm by reducing the magnetic field so back-EMF does not clamp top speed. REVRides starts at 50% FW. EBMX’s app guide says 100% FW can add up to 300 battery amps on top of the battery-amp setting.

EBMX or Torp for a stock Light Bee?+

Epic Cycles (Feb 2026): Torp if you want stock BMS talk and OEM functions; EBMX if you are building 72V+ with aftermarket motors. Torp lists TC1000 2.0 at 50 kW, 700 A battery, 1,000 A phase, 60–80 V nominal.

Is controller tuning legal on a Class 2 ebike?+

Raising continuous power over 750W or deleting the speed limiter leaves 15 U.S.C. § 2085 (pedals, under 750W, motor-only under 20 mph). Aventon/Bosch class menus are not phase-amp tuning. A Sur-Ron or Tuttio is already not a bicycle.

Where should I start on an X-9000?+

REVRides: vehicle and battery preset, throttle calibration, halls with the wheel up, then about 300 phase / 70 battery and 50% field weakening. Work up. The stock Sur-Ron plug is rated ~240 A DC for about ten seconds.

Should I do these mods or repairs myself?+

Do this at your own risk. Work with a qualified ebike or e-moto technician for wiring, batteries, brakes, and controller maps. SickEBike is an informational desk, not a shop. A wrong amp limit, a mismatched charger, or a bad bleed can start a fire or a crash.
