The Ebike Mods We Actually Like
Tires, lights, locks, sintered pads, pegs. Not a 72-volt Amazon controller on a Class 2. Two lists: bicycles that stay legal, and e-motos that get faster on purpose.
By SickEBike desk
The short answer
On a Class 1–3 bicycle, the mods that pay are tires at sidewall PSI, real lights, two locks, fenders/rack, and pads — not a 1,500W hub. On a Tuttio or Light Bee: pegs, knobbies, sintered pads, then a 220–240 mm rotor. Controllers and derestrict files leave U.S. bicycle law (pedals, under 750W, motor-only under 20 mph).
This desk likes mods that you feel on Tuesday, not mods that turn a bicycle into a court date. There are two lists. On a Class 1–3 bike — Level 4, Aventure 3, Lectric XP4, a Tern — we bolt on rubber, light, lock, and a rack, and we leave the 750-watt hangtag alone. On a Tuttio Soleil01 or a Light Bee X, we start with pegs, tires, and pads, and we treat a controller as the last thing, not the first. 15 U.S.C. § 2085 still wants pedals, under 750 watts, and motor-only under 20 mph if you want the federal bicycle. Strip the limiter or the pedals and you bought a moped. This is the ranked list, not a shopping haul.
The legal line, before a single hex key
Safety parts stay legal: brighter lights, hydraulic pads, wider tires that fit the frame, a horn, mirrors, a rack the maker rated. TST’s 2026 moped-mod note and every state class chart agree on the red list: speed-limiter deletion, motor over 750W, throttle on a Class 1/3, pedals off. California already wants a rear red light in daylight as of 1 January 2026 on that roundup; nationwide, white front and red rear after dark are the floor. UL 2849 is the bike plus pack plus charger. A random 52V brick from a marketplace is not a “range mod.” It is how garages burn. Full voltage math is in volts, amps, and watt-hours.
Desk ranking: what we actually bolt on. Legal column is U.S. Class 1–3 bicycle law, not e-moto. Sources: 15 U.S.C. § 2085, TST 2026 street-legal mods, eBike Travelers accessories, Traction Bikes / Darwin EV Sur-Ron paths, FactoryZ brake sequence.
| Mod | On a Class 1–3 bicycle | On a Tuttio / Light Bee / MX4 |
|---|---|---|
| Tires + correct PSI | First. 5–15% range is common shop talk | MX rubber if you leave pavement |
| Lights (white front, red rear) | Legal + the one that prevents the car | Bar light plus a brake light if you street-homologate |
| Lock / rack / fenders | 10–15% of bike price for two locks | Skip. Different theft and no grocery run |
| Sintered pads / bigger rotor | If levers go long or you haul cargo | Second, after pegs. See Sur-Ron brakes |
| Pegs, bars, grips, bash plate | Rarely needed | First money on a mini or Light Bee |
| Second OEM battery | Yes if the brand sells a matched DualBattery | Range pack, voltage-matched, not Amazon |
| Controller / derestrict / >750W motor | Turns it into a motor vehicle | Last. Then you need the brakes you skipped |

Class 1–3: the mods that pay rent
Tires. eBike Travelers’ 2026 accessories FAQ still prints the boring truth: a floor pump and the sidewall number add more range than a $400 accessory battery for most commuters. They quote 5–15% from pressure alone. Puncture belts or an e-bike-rated carcass (many makers stamp E-50 / E-bike on the sidewall) stop the Tuesday glass. Fat-tire bikes (Aventure 3, RadRover 6 Plus) need the printed low-PSI range, not a road-tire ego. The Magnum how-to in our maintenance checklist is the method: gauge, not thumb.
Lights. Faster closing speed than an analog bike. eBike Travelers: 800–1,200 lumens up front for unlit roads, a flashing red rear, USB so you actually charge it. Aventon Level 4 and a lot of 2026 commuters already ship a lighting package; BikeRide’s September 2026 commuter roundup called out Level 4’s integrated tail and brake-brightening signals as the reason you may not need a bar clamp. If the stock lamp is a glowworm, add a real one. White front, red rear after dark in all 50 states. Helmet law is separate — CPSC 16 CFR 1203, Class 3 helmets in California, under-16 in Florida.
Fenders and a rack. RSTechALO’s accessory video is the same sermon every wet commute teaches: a $70 fender set keeps the drivetrain and your back out of the spray, and a rack turns the bike into a car trip. Cargo bikes (Tern HSD/GSD) already have the rack; do not exceed the printed kilo rating with a kid plus groceries. Folding bikes (Lectric XP4) want a rack that still folds. Locks: this desk still budgets 10–15% of the bike for two of them — a hardened chain or folding lock through the frame and a cable for the front wheel. One lock is a suggestion to a thief.
Brakes and drivetrain on a bicycle are maintenance before they are mods. Resin pads on a 70 lb Class 2 with a rack will glaze. Swap to a compound the caliper maker lists. If the bike shipped mechanical and you haul cargo, a hydraulic kit is a safety upgrade, not a class change. Mid-drive bikes eat chains; a chain checker at 0.5% is cheaper than a cassette. Belt bikes get a wipe. None of that is a YouTube “stage 2.”

Batteries we like: a second OEM pack when the brand sells it (Bosch DualBattery, some Aventon range extenders). Same voltage class, matched charger, UL 2849 system. We do not like a 20Ah no-name triangle taped to the down tube of a 36-volt Bosch bike. Voltage is not a flavor. 36V, 48V, and 52V chargers are different bricks. Store the extra pack at 40–80%, indoors. Firmware (Bosch Flow, Aventon app) is a free mod. Use it.
What we skip on bicycles: app unlocks past the class the path allows, a 1,500W hub in a 700c dropout without a torque arm, and “range” claims that are a bigger motor drinking the same watt-hours faster. Grin-style torque arms exist for a reason on 1,000W+ conversion hubs (KirbEbike’s July 2026 guide). A stock 750W Class 2 does not need one. A conversion that does need one has already left the bicycle aisle.
E-motos: pegs first, controller last
The desk Tuttio — and every Light Bee we watch — gets the Traction Bikes 2026 order almost verbatim: bar position, aftermarket footpegs, bash plate, grips, a tire that matches dirt, then pads. Warp9-style pegs on a Light Bee exist because stock pegs are narrow and the brackets bend when a heavy rider stands up. A Soleil01 is the same complaint at 14/12. Pegs are cheap. They change whether you stay on the bike. Bars and a stem that put the controls where your hands actually are will do more for a 13-year-old (or a 6'2" adult) than a controller map.

Tires on 19/18 Light Bees: Traction names FORTRA MX18 80/100-19 and Kenda Millville-class knobbies as the usual swap off the stock dual-sport rubber. On a 14-inch Tuttio or Villain, buy the size the rim says and a compound for dirt, not a street slick if you actually jump. Then brakes. Stock Light Bee is four-piston 203 mm plus five-level regen — the whole Sur-Ron brakes piece. Sequence: sintered pads, bleed, 220–240 mm rotor, Ultra Bee caliper if the motor outruns the heat. Tuttio has a dedicated Ultra Bee rear kit in 2026. Do that before a controller.
Controllers (EBMX X-9000, Torp TC-1000, FarDriver on the Villain) are real power. They are also how a 10 kW Light Bee becomes a 30 kW YouTube crash. Darwin EV’s 2025 path puts controller, then battery, then motor — and then tells you to upgrade brakes, suspension, and wheels to match. We reverse the middle of that sentence. Brakes and rubber first. Talaria MX4 riders do the same: the gearbox already hits hard stock; the aftermarket is still pads and pegs until the stock 8 kW is the limit. A 72V 35Ah Light Bee already holds about 2.5 kWh. A bigger pack is range. A random voltage is a fire. Matched charger only. If the build is for private land and you already spent on Ultra Bee calipers and a 240 mm disc, then a controller is a product. If you still commute the Courtney Campbell on a Class 2, it is a ticket.

Comfort that is not a personality
A suspension seatpost on a rigid commuter (27.2 / 30.9 / 31.6 mm — measure) is a real quality-of-life bolt-on. Bandit Bikes’ 2026 aftermarket note still lists that post, a 600–1,200 lumen lamp with a cut-off beam so you do not flash drivers, and a rack rated 25–35 kg. Grips that are not OEM plastic. A phone mount if you navigate, not if you film your own commute at 28 mph. Mirrors on a cargo bike in traffic. None of this is a dyno. All of it is why people keep the bike instead of listing it. The fall kit is the seasonal version: bring the pack in when it freezes, aim a bar light, wear a layer the motor does not replace.
Firmware and sensor swap: Aventon and Lectric 2026 bikes that let you toggle torque vs cadence are a software mod we like. Torque feels like a bicycle; cadence is the shove. BikeRide’s 2026 commuter guide walks that toggle on Level 4 and Velotric. Use torque on a path. Use cadence if your knees want the motor to do the start. Do not use the same menu to set 28 mph on the Pinellas Trail (20 mph posted) or Tampa Riverwalk (15). The app is not the sign.

What we will not put on the bike
A marketplace battery that does not match the charger voltage. A derestrict file on a Class 2 you still ride to school. Pedals off so it “looks like a dirt bike” — that is how you lose the bicycle definition. A 4,000W hub in an aluminum fork with no torque arm. Lights aimed at drivers’ eyes. A full-face helmet on a 15 mph Riverwalk (wrong tool) or a CPSC lid on a Light Bee jump (also the wrong tool). Maintenance is the mod you do every week: lube, PSI, pads. It is cheaper than every part on this page.
If you only do three: pump the tires, add a light you will turn on, and put sintered pads on whatever you ride that already has hydraulics. If you ride the Tuttio: pegs, pads, then talk about a Light Bee. If you already have the Light Bee: read the brake piece before you buy a Torp. Buy the bike that already has the rack and the lights if you can — Aventon and Tern charge less for those parts as a system than you will paying Amazon twice. That is the whole list.
Questions people ask
What is the first mod to make on an ebike?+
Correct tire pressure and a light you will turn on. eBike Travelers still quotes 5–15% more range from PSI alone. White front and red rear after dark are required in all 50 states.
Can I put a bigger battery on my ebike?+
Yes if it is the brand’s matched pack (same voltage, UL 2849 system, matched charger). A random 52V triangle on a 36V or 48V bike is how packs fail. Watt-hours are the tank, not amp-hours.
Is unlocking Class 3 a legal mod?+
Only where Class 3 is legal and you wear the helmet the state wants (California: every Class 3 rider). Path signs still win — Pinellas Trail 20 mph, Tampa Riverwalk 15. An app is not the sign.
What should I upgrade first on a Tuttio or Sur-Ron?+
Pegs, bars, tires, then sintered brake pads. Traction Bikes and this desk put a controller last. A Light Bee already makes 10 kW; the stock 203 mm discs are the limit, not the motor.
Are speed-limiter deletes legal on a Class 2?+
No. Removing the limiter, exceeding 750W, or taking the pedals off reclassifies the bike as a motor vehicle in U.S. product law. Lights, brakes, and tires do not.
Do I need a torque arm?+
On a stock 750W Class 2 hub, usually no. On 1,000W+ conversion hubs, yes — Grin-style arms exist because axles spin in dropouts. If you need one, you have left the bicycle aisle.
Should I do these mods or repairs myself?+
Do this at your own risk. Work with a qualified ebike or e-moto technician for wiring, batteries, brakes, and controller maps. SickEBike is an informational desk, not a shop. A wrong amp limit, a mismatched charger, or a bad bleed can start a fire or a crash.

Phase amps are torque. Battery amps are the pack’s throat. Field weakening is extra RPM you pay for in heat. The app is not a dyno, and it is not a Class 2.

Four-piston 203 mm hydraulics and five-level regen on a 10 kW trail bike. Great versus a Tuttio. Not great versus a motorcycle. The aftermarket is the actual product.
